VERBEEK BROTHERS

The Verbeek Brothers of Velden, Holland, work magic in small spaces. Years of development and fine tuning has allowed them to create an ecosystem within their greenhouses. With limited ground area to devote to each plant the Verbeek Brothers have sought to make use of the vertical space by training tomato and bell pepper vines to grow as long as 40 feet. Crops are rotated annually to prevent soil-depletion, and the Verbeek brothers have developed a special composting system to fit the greenhouse conditions. Eggplants are planted at the beginning and end of each row of tomatoes to attract pests away from the crop. These pests are then kept under control with periodic releases of beneficial insects.
